New restaurants, development arriving at Pike and Rose, North Bethesda

Ongoing, new development expected to be a boon to North Bethesda eateries

The North Bethesda neighborhood in Montgomery County, Md. is experiencing ongoing and new development. Federal Realty’s Pike and Rose development has come on strong, attracting a lot of interest. The second phase of Pike and Rose, which is still underway, has brought The Canopy by Hilton Hotel, and aims to add 80,000 square feet of office space and 340,000 square feet of total retail once completed. 909 Rose, a trophy office building, is being developed not far from some of the most recent restaurant openings. And then, there is the Grand Park-VOB development, across Old Georgetown Road, making its way through the Planning Board.

New restaurants have emerged, including Julii, Jinya Ramen Bar and Nada. Other eateries and retailers have transitioned out, making way for new restaurants, like Indian Commonwealth and Fogo de Chao. Indian Commonwealth opened in May. Fogo de Chao, a Brazilian steakhouse serving churrasco-style meats tableside, opens this month.

For those who have noticed, the Old Georgetown side of Pike and Rose, which housed the former City Sports store, Shophouse and La Madeleine, is probably the most volatile in terms of tenant turnover due to pedestrian flow.

Soon, the thoroughfare will see new construction (and perhaps more noise and dust, also) as a new mixed-use style development gets underway across Old Georgetown Road, at the site of retail and banking businesses and Nissan and Saab dealerships, notes Friends of White Flint The Grand Park-VOB development, has been an evolving plan, but is sure to bring more than 1M square feet of development. With the 941K square feet of residential space currently planned, 577 residential units will arrive. Currently 13 percent of units are affordable housing under MPDU.

The Grand Park Ave-VOB development will extend Grand Park Avenue east across Old Georgetown Road and three new towers will rise there, according to preliminary sketch plans. Two blocks northwest, 909 Rose also emerges and Federal Realty has chosen the 12-level office building as its new home. The North Bethesda headquarters of the property developer is expected to feature “unprecedented” network and Internet connectivity and a lounge & amenity rooftop terrace. The tenants in these new projects will be welcome prospects for the existing North Bethesda eateries.

New Pike and Rose restaurant openings

Here are some of the new restaurants opening or recently opened:

Julii – French-Mediterranean restaurant Julii opened in early December. The concept was created by the founders of fast-casual Cava, which began its rise to fame in the same city—Rockville—as a spin-off of Cava Mezze. Bethesda Magazine reviewed the restaurant and gave it a “Go,” with just a few menu “misses.” Cava co-founder Ted Xenohristos called it a “passion project.” Executive Chef Sasha Felikson is a former RAMMYS finalist for Rising Culinary Star and a young, culinary mover and shaker. He has a fine-dining pedigree and came over from Doi Moi. Julii is the perfect dining destination on a quiet summer evening after some post-Pike-and-Rose shopping enjoyment.

Commonwealth Indian – opened in May. Said Yelp reviewer Shivana D., “First thing to note is that the restaurant interior is decorated beautifully. Everything is sparkling clean and the ambiance is a nice blend of Indian culture and fine dining. The buffet itself had a lot of great varieties, including lots of vegan and vegetarian options. The chicken curry was delicious as was the mixed vegetables in garlic sauce. The restaurant was bustling on Sunday, but our servers were still very attentive with filling our water glasses and refilling the unlimited mimosa.” The restaurant, which garnered 4.5 stars on Yelp, has both indoor and outdoor seating.

Fogo de Chao – The restaurant chain announced the opening of the Pike and Rose location—its third in Greater Washington, D.C.—June 24. The outdoor patio will have al-fresco dining options not too dissimilar from those at Del Frisco’s Grille cater-corned on Grand Park. Also, the restaurant is set to offer views of the rotisserie grill with an open kitchen format and “sweeping wine cases.” Expect happy hour to be a hit, initially, but quite short: Happy Hour is 4:30 p.m. to 6:;30 p.m.

Nada – a Taco and Cocktail Joint – At this Mexican-style restaurant, you’ll be hard pressed to find an open bar seat during happy hour; likewise, tables can be scarce during the dinner rush in the latter part of the week and weekends. Make sure to reserve ahead of time. Nada is part of a chain that includes five locations, including in Ohio, Indianapolis and this one. Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews have been mostly favorable at 4.0 stars.
