La Famosa, Calico, Estuary plan special events
A pop-up eatery, a market pop-up and a workshop are sure to stir up excitement and feelings of nostalgia as we approach the holidays. First, La Famosa Restaurant, which is set to open in spring 2020, plans a pop-up restaurant November 16. Then, Estuary and the Conrad Hotel team up with She Loves Me for a wreath-making class, complete with pick-me-up toddies. Finally, Calico will host a pop-up market in its backyard, with abundant holiday festivities and a Christmas tree lot.
La Famosa Pop-Up
The celebration and sneak peak will take place at Right Proper Brewing’s Brookland Production House and Tasting Room November 16. For this event, Puerto Rican food is the name of the game. The La Famosa team plans to toil away in the kitchen and serve customers so they can experience a taste of what’s to come when they open in Navy Yard.
Guests will sample bites that bring the rhythm of Puerto Rico to life.
- Bolitas de queso – Influenced by the Swiss, fried cheese balls are a Puerto Rican tradition. They’re also a classic dish from a restaurant in San Juan, the Swiss Chalet, which is now closed ($5).
- Tripleta Sandwich – it’s the working man’s sandwich, according to the restaurant. This street food is a combination of pressed pork, steak and ham sandwich. La Famosa will serve it on pan de agua bread with garlicky “mayocup.” ($9).
- Pastelillitos de Jueyes – crab fritters, similar to empanadas, pay homage to the fry shacks of Loiza. As it turns out, the northeastern coastal town was ravaged during Hurricane Maria ($7).

Calico Winter Wonderland
Over at Calico, “Blagden Alley’s urban backyard, a Winter Market will surface – this one with a pop-up tree lot, gift wrapping, cookie decorating and ornament painting. It’s a craft shop to remember and the fun is just getting started. Guests can pick out their trees and also decorate them. Additionally, wrapped gifts and sweets are also available. The free-of-charge market celebration takes place Sunday, December 8, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Calico will offer guests the opportunity to decorate freshly-baked cookies at a cookie decorating bar lined with sprinkles and other sweet toppings. Market-goers will want to take advantage of food and drink specials that are easy on the wallet. Bar director Ian Fletcher plans some hot cocktails for guests in addition to warm meat pies courtesy of Chef Nathan Beauchamp. And an oyster grilling feast is also on tap.

Estuary + She Loves Me wreath-making class
Estuary, which is located on the third floor of the Conrad Washington, D.C. hotel, is hosting a wreath-making class. A partnership with She Loves Me will bring warming teas, toddies and afternoon treats while attendees learn this fine art. On November 23, guests will learn how to make holiday wreaths in the Blue Willow Room. Abundant with light, the setting is said to be ideal for personal creativity.
Attendees will learn “Techniques covered include color pairings, how to manipulate flowers into specific shapes, using floral wire and tape, and tips on how to locally source greenery and flowers,” said the hotel’s announcement. Afternoon treats, including comforting desserts, will also be available. Here are some of the naughty treats:
- Gingerbread Opera Cake
- Eggnog Cream Puff
- Speculoos Jam Cookies
- Chocolate Peppermint Tart
- Chestnut Bread Pudding
The workshop will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The organizers are selling tickets for $85 per person. Tickets are for materials and a completed wreath, in addition to food and beverages, including tax and gratuity.
